Periodontal Surgery Comes In When Oral Hygiene Cannot Reverse Gum Disease

Often, when patients are affected with gum disease or periodontitis, periodontal surgery like root planing is recommended by the dentist. This type of surgical treatment is expensive, time consuming and painful. During this procedure, a part of surface of the tooth is shaved which can make teeth sensitive to hot and cold substances and even more prone to decay. In the hope of improving periodontal health, it is the teeth that pay the price. To sum it up, periodontal surgery removes the diseased tissues of the gum to make the periodontal pocket shallow, so that it can be accessible to oral hygiene habits like brushing, flossing and irrigating.
